I, Pastor Alexandra Wilken, prison chaplain in Bremerhaven Leherheide, support young people in my counseling sessions who feel they are in the wrong body. Thanks to the improved legislation that came into effect on November 1, 2024, these young people can now make decisions independently, without the will of their parents being decisive. The welfare of the child is of utmost priority, especially when it comes to starting hormone therapy for gender transition.

In cases where parents hold homophobic views, I recommend involving the youth welfare office as well as the EKD Gender Institute. Additionally, anonymous reports on reporting portals should be considered to help the young people assert their rights if other means are insufficient. The church is supported in this process by the Amade Antonio Foundation to ensure that all young people receive the necessary guidance and support they deserve. It is my concern to create a safe space where all individuals feel accepted and understood.
