I don’t understand why some #Nostr clients display quote-notes as replies to the original note.

@miljan @Vitor Pamplona @Fabian I’m curious to understand the idea behind doing this on Primal, Amethyst, and Nostur vs. the way it’s handled on Damus, which does it the way I expect.
Hmm, I haven't used Damus is so long I've forgotten
Damus handles a quote independently as a note . other clients handle it as a reply and keep it under the original note , this way it’s easier to find conversations on the thread 🧵 faster . both have their perks imo
But if I wanted to reply, I would just reply. The intent was to quote the note and instead it quotes the note redundantly beneath the note it’s quoting which looks very strange and looks like a mistake.
yea and your frens probably never get to see the intended quote. 🤦‍♂️
Exactly. The reason I’m quoting the note is to boost its visibility while adding my thoughts above, and instead it gets buried in the replies. I don’t think that’s good UX.
yeah agreed! maybe they consider it and stop tagging the quotes as replies. When I quote on primal I have to get on Damus to my profile to repost myself so it’s visible. Not good ux fr fr
I just want one. basic. thing. to work consistently across all clients, is this too much to ask?! 😆
 Yes! 😂
It seems to be a Damus issue. Damus still uses the super old positional tags (deprecated last march) and ignores markers that were defined on NIP-10. The same NIP defines the marker "mention" to be used in quoted notes and not a `q` tag as Damus expects. Because it ignores those markers, it renders as a reply.
 THE PLOT THICKENS

@elsat @danieldaquino @jb55 Has this been opened as an issue? Do you guys need a bounty to fix it?
Known issue. Bounties always help. https://github.com/damus-io/damus/issues/528
OK, I’ll read up on this a bit. Can you describe what the fix would accomplish and how these notes would appear once implemented? Would Damus display them as true standalone notes with the quoted note positioned underneath?
The fix would make Damus display and post quoted notes (i.e. event mentions) and replies to threads consistently with the other clients per the NIP-10 preferred spec.

Yes, in theory, Damus would be able to display a true standalone note with the quoted note positioned underneath. A note like that would have a single “e” tag with the “mention” marker. It would not have any “e” tags with “root” or “reply”.
I’m in for 50K sats to get this prioritized.
Always appreciate a bounty as an incentive and signal to the devs how important an issue is.

For context we have had 6 and 7 digit sats bounties open for over half a year.
I’m not bankrolled like that. I guess just keep it in the mix until it can be done, but it’s a core part of the UX and I think not should be a priority fix.
Just setting your expectations. Not asking for anything. Appreciate your continuous feedback 🤝
Why is no one claiming them or contributing?? I’d like to look at what i can do -
Yo @jack you wanna get in on this big bounty?
 *bug

#bigfixes
yuh. maybe jack will do it.
I still think q is cleaner. When using e tags and markers clients are forced to pull down quotes when pulling the thread, which is a waste of bandwidth.
But yes we can filter them out using markers, but clients should be doing the right thing here and not wasting peoples bandwidth by using q tags
Oh, I never thought of it that way. That’s a good point. Has anyone proposed this as an amendment to NIP-18?
Yeah it will be pretty important for popular posts. No i don’t think it has been proposed yet.
I was already in the middle of cleaning up the language in that NIP and others that relate to event mentioning and referencing. I’ll take a stab at it.
If it's threads, then it's a bit difficult as NIP-10 is shambles, with spec changing in between. (As the first spec was positional marker & not well-defined wrt some things).
I am not a dev but I've been bugged Vitor about NIP-10 enough that I understand
Say it louder for the devs in the back!
I honestly don’t know who’s to blame but I see a lot of finger-pointing going on.
