Very freedom minded man & very tolerant if compared to men of his time.

Too often we try to judge historical figures by the moral & legal standards of today. 
There are no saints in hindsight, but putting ourselves in the frame of mind as they would have been can allow us to appreciate progress or bemoan regression.
