Hong Kong's container port has dropped out of the top 10 busiest container ports in 2023 for the first time, according to a recent report by Alphaliner . The volume of containers handled in Hong Kong fell by 14.1% to 14.3 million units in 2023, resulting in the city losing about one-third of its container business over the past decade. This decline has significant implications for Hong Kong's trading and logistics sector, which contributes more than one-fifth to the city's GDP and employs over half a million people. Major shipping companies are reported to be skipping Hong Kong in their schedules for 2025. As a result, Transport and Logistics Secretary Lam Sai-hung is being urged to take action to regain Hong Kong's position in these major shipping schedules .
